Eating Disorder Treatment + Vegan Lifestyle
Recovery shouldn’t require abandoning deeply held values. Aster Springs offers specialized eating disorder treatment that honors a client’s ethical commitment to a vegan lifestyle while delivering the clinical rigor recovery demands.
Eating Disorder Treatment for Clients With a Vegan Lifestyle
For many people, veganism is more than a list of foods they don’t eat. It may reflect deeply held beliefs about animals, the environment, culture, community, or personal responsibility. Entering eating disorder treatment shouldn’t require someone to set those values aside.
At Aster Springs, veganism isn’t treated as a symptom. It’s respected as a deeply held value. The program is built around treating eating disorders in people who are vegan — a distinction that shapes the clinical approach from assessment through discharge. The team works to understand the history and meaning behind each client’s vegan lifestyle, assess how it interacts with eating disorder symptoms, and build a treatment plan that supports nourishment and genuine progress in recovery.
How the Vegan Programming Works
This treatment path is designed for clients who have followed a vegan lifestyle for at least six months before seeking treatment. That history is confirmed with members of the client’s support system or current outpatient treatment team to help the clinical team distinguish long-standing ethical commitments from dietary changes that may be influenced by the eating disorder.
Clients who meet the eligibility criteria and are clinically appropriate may begin treatment on a vegan meal plan from day one. The admissions and clinical teams can explain the assessment process and answer questions before enrollment.

About Vegan Diets + Eating Disorder Recovery
Veganism has grown significantly over the past decade, and with that growth has come increased attention to how plant-based diets intersect with eating disorder risk and recovery.
A 2025 study published in the National Institutes of Health’s National Library of Medicine found that among more than 11,500 college students in the US, those who recently adopted a vegetarian or vegan diet had significantly higher rates of binge eating, compulsive exercise, and fasting — yet showed no difference in treatment-seeking behavior, suggesting that disordered eating in this population often goes unrecognized and untreated.
“Plant-based diets are one of the fastest-growing dietary movements in the US — and for clients in eating disorder recovery, specialized treatment that respects that commitment isn’t a luxury. It’s a clinical necessity.”
These statistics don’t suggest that veganism causes eating disorders. They highlight why treatment programs need to be equipped to work within vegan frameworks rather than around them — and why clients deserve clinicians who can tell the difference between a value and a symptom.

FAQs
Will clients be required to eat animal products during treatment?
Eligible clients following a vegan lifestyle receive a vegan meal plan and are not asked to eat animal products as a routine part of programming. Admission to the vegan treatment path depends on an individualized review of the client’s history and current medical and nutritional needs. If safety concerns or clinically necessary recommendations arise, the care team discusses them directly with the client. No client is asked to prove recovery by eating a non-vegan food.
How does Aster Springs determine whether veganism is connected to an eating disorder?
Through ongoing clinical assessment and honest conversation. Therapists and dietitians work with each client to explore the motivations behind their dietary choices. In many cases, veganism and the eating disorder are entirely separate. In others, there may be overlap. The clinical team’s role is to help clients understand that relationship clearly so they can make informed decisions about their recovery — not to challenge their values.
What if a client has been vegan for less than six months?
The six-month guideline helps the clinical team distinguish long-standing ethical commitments from dietary changes that may be influenced by the eating disorder. For clients who have been vegan for less than six months, the admissions team works with them and their outpatient providers to determine the best approach for care.
Can a person recover from an eating disorder while remaining vegan?
Yes. Recovery and veganism are not mutually exclusive. The goal at Aster Springs is to help clients build a more balanced, nourishing relationship with food within the framework of their values. For some clients, treatment will strengthen their ability to live their vegan lifestyle more fully. For others, the therapeutic process may surface questions they had not previously considered. In either case, the client guides those decisions — not the treatment team.
Which eating disorders can be treated through this approach?
The vegan programming at Aster Springs is available to clients being treated for anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), and other specified feeding or eating disorders (OSFED). Clinical appropriateness is determined on an individual basis during the assessment and admissions process.
